Kelly's Story: |
Well, I found out I had Uterine Didelphys back when I was 16 years old. I hadn't started my period yet and my doctor decided to do an HSG. She discovered I had a vaginal septum, 2 cervices and 2 uterine cavities. She suggested that I would need to have corrective surgery in order to have a baby. Well, at the time, having a baby was the last thing on my mind. So, I put it off to worry about when I was older. Now, I am 32 years old. My husband and I are ready to have a baby. I tried to retrieve the HSG films to get some opinions as to whether or not I should have surgery. They were destroyed since they were older than 10 years! So, I have been struggling to get another one or a laproscopy or SOMETHING, just so I could see what my uterus looked like and what my chances of carrying to term were. I was living in London, England during the past year and the doctors were not very helpful/knowlegdable on the subject. They kept telling me that I should just go ahead and try to conceive, how else would I know? (I tried to explain my unwillingness to "go ahead and try" when there was the possibility of losing the baby, they were unphased) Nonetheless, my husband and I decided to go ahead and try. The very first month that we were TTC, we were successful! I must have taken 10 pregnancy tests before one finally came back positive! (I think I WILLED it to happen, haha) I phoned the doctor and he scheduled an Ultrasound. When they saw my uterus, they had to call in a consultant, 2 other doctors and 3 nurses to "confer". They debated for awhile as to whether I was actually UD or not. They thought it was BU at first, then a complete septum. The final consensus was "none of the above". They said the closest diagnosis would be Uterine Didelphys which is tightly fused. In essence, I had a complete septum due to the "tightly fused" 2 uterine bodies. I apparently defy the medical books, since they say that during Mullerian Duct Fusion, fusion begins from the bottom and works its way up. Mine apparently started at the top, since I still have 2 cervices and the vaginal septum. So, I am still pregnant, about 9 weeks, on the right side. I am scheduled for another US on May 14th [editor's note: it turned out great!]. I am very anxious to find out if everything is okay. The embryo is implanted on the septum, but at the top of the septum which is very thick and should have a good blood supply. I wish all of you the best of luck. I don't know what I would have done without this network of women on the internet! I only hope that I can offer others a success story in the end!
